To motivate adult learners to learn, it’s imperative that the core principles of adult learning and the roots of andragogy (consists of learning strategies focused on adults), be present. Learning activities must be used to engage the learner; while the learning itself must be seen as relevant and of intrinsic value to the learner.
From an instructor’s perspective, it is crucial that the payoff for the adult learner be immediate, relevant, and comparable to the effort put forth.
From the organization’s perspective they also need to see a return on their investment (ROI) and how the intervention helps align with the organization’s strategic goals and core values.
The instructor’s role, as well as the participants’ role, in any training program, is critical to the overall success or failure of the program. Hence, there are many tools available to help the instructor ensure the program is successful.
